Whenever Fall comes, I always seem to start watching a few of the new shows. One of them is called Blood and Oil. It's about a young couple, Billy and Cody LeFever, looking to start over in a new state/new city with new people. Originally, they were going to open a laundromat. Unfortunately, disaster struck at the border and they lost their truck and the washer/dryer machines. So, instead of turning back home, they move forward.
Full speed ahead, in one episode, Ada Eze, a friend of Cody's who opened a food truck with her husband, tells Billy, Cody's husband, "This place with all its temptations, it's easy to lose your way. But if you hold on tight to the one you love, you can find your way home again." The situation that Billy was facing was that he realized he was pulling away from Cody and getting into bed with the oil tycoon that everyone had warned him about from day one, Hap Briggs. This man doesn't care about anyone but himself and will do anything to get what he wants. He's already a millionaire, but that's not enough for him. Billy, being the wildcat he is, wants desperately to give Cody everything and more, which in itself is not a bad thing to want. It's how he was trying to get it that was bothering Cody.
In my own life as a writer with aspirations to become independent and be a NY Times Bestseller, I don't want to lose sight of why I wanted to become a writer in the first place. Nor do I want to look back and say, "I wish I hadn't done that." I want to get to where I want to be honorably with my integrity intact. Sometimes that means taking the slow road. I've got to keep my head up, cling to those I can trust and never lose sight of my dreams.
