TV, What I Make of It

From late 2013 to mid-2015, I've been involved with my local TV station, WIN TV. I volunteer most of my time to the TV show called Simply Fresh Foods where I man one of three cameras as well as assist in setting up, making food displays and of course, clean up. It's been interesting and fun seeing the finished product as well as being directly involved in making a TV show. I now have more respect for those on screen and behind the screen.

Simply Fresh Foods is a great show for people just learning how to cook and those who are seasoned chefs but want to try something new. The hostess, Chef Renee, thoroughly enjoys finding recipes and adding her own twist to it. She also likes to find complicated recipes and make them simple enough for the ordinary cook to learn. I love working with her and I hope you enjoy her shows. Hers and more can be found here.

I will admit, it's weird seeing my name in the credits, but it's a good feeling. At first, I was extremely nervous but with practice, I began to get better. Having the faith of the station manager and making friends with people on set was an added bonus. One time, I did some shooting in the field and again I was a bit anxious, but the station manager knew I could do it. It turned out, she was right. I enjoyed it and I can't wait for another opportunity to arise.

Someday, I'm thinking about starting my own TV show whether it's at WIN TV or not. I want to continue to show the world the beauty of American Sign Language and get kids interested in it at a young age. More and more schools are offering ASL as a foreign language and I just love that! I will be a new kind of Bill Cosby!

Honestly, I can't wait what other cool adventures WIN TV has in store for me. Still unsure if I want to make this a career, but it helps to have experience in TV production if I ever want to be a screenwriter or when my book becomes a movie. WIN TV is an awesome place to start if you're interested in this industry and are in the area. If not, look for a small TV station near you to volunteer. I'm sure you'll find it to be an incredible adventure!

Update May 2016: My producer has finished editing my documentary called Whole New World: A Documentary On Deaf Culture is now available On Demand!
