"You may not have had a happy beginning. But that doesn't make you who you are. It's who you chose to be." Soothsayer in Kung Fu Panda 2
Before you say that's a kid movie, let me say this: many "kid movies" have the most profound lessons that we all can learn from and be reminded of. I love Kung Fu Panda and others like it because underneath it all, there is something for everyone no matter their age.
Growing up, my role model was Michelle Kwan because she was beautiful, graceful and an amazing ice-skater. I wanted to be just like her! In real life, I had my parents to look up to but no one that really touched my heart until my later high school years. It was then when I encountered individuals who pushed me to be better, acted like a "bodyguard" against bullies, and helped me see the positives in my life.
I wish I had someone say to me what the Soothsayer said to Po when I was in middle school. Maybe I wouldn't have spent so much time in that dark hole. Now, my beginning wasn't as rough as Po's but it wasn't something I'd wish on anyone either. I had to work harder at most everything than my peers or my younger sister. Creative writing was the only thing that came easy to me.
It wasn't until college where I found others my own age who accepted me for who I was and it was then that I came out of my shell I had holed myself in for so long. I chose to be Ruth E. Jackson and proud of it! Everyday, I do my best not to let my past cloud my present but sometimes it clogs my mind to the point where all I can do is cry. I don't want to ever let my past dictate who I am. Each day is a step forward towards my dream and I'm not stopping 'til I arrive.
