Netflix and the Deaf World

Recently, I came across this article. While I knew that Netflix for a long time wasn't providing captions on ALL content, I was appalled to learn that the National Association of the Deaf had to take them to court in order to settle the matter. We shouldn't have to fight for captions! Captions! We are not asking for much here.

Still today, when I get a movie out of the library -- a new movie mind you -- when I get home sometimes there aren't any English captions available! Really? It's frustrating when I see a video on Facebook I want to watch and I search for the caption (CC) button and there isn't one. Ok, I guess you don't want the Deaf population to understand what this important message is. Typically, it doesn't bother me if it's a commercial on TV or before a movie starts, but there are times I want to know why my friends and family are laughing.

This article gives a more in depth descriptions of what happened between NAD and Netflix.

I'm happy that Netflix is now accessible, I just wish we didn't have to go to court to get it.
