Sadly, many people (both hearing and deaf) believe that in order to succeed, you must be able to hear. The hearing world pushes us to wear hearing aids and cochlear implants, instead of learning sign language. Only one of those options require invasive surgery and hours of therapy. Learning another language is noninvasive and doesn't generally require as much effort.
I remember my days in speech therapy. They were long and tedious. It was extremely difficult to pronounce words when I couldn't hear all the syllables. Why do hearing people pressure us to get expensive devices when it's much cheaper and easier to learn sign language? There are so many resources online and many schools offer continued education classes and some Deaf schools have free or low cost community classes.
One of the reasons why I wanted to talk about this was because of a TV advertisement by Lincoln. This is what being Deaf should look like, in my opinion. Being able to enjoy life they way we are made, not being forced to be something we're not. WE ARE NOT HEARING. Regardless of whether we wear hearing aids or cochlear implants or not doesn't change the fact that it's difficult to understand speech.
If you want to learn ASL, I encourage you to find classes nearby or start watching Bill Vicars's YouTube channel.
