How Much Do We Really Know?

Writer: Ruth JacksonRuth Jackson

The last few weeks social media has been filled with posts about Kim Davis. Every time there's a conversation about it or, more often than not, an argument, I find myself wondering how much truth is the media telling us? We all know by now each station has a slant and very often we are not given the whole story. So, why are we arguing about something when we don't know the truth?

On this particular subject, I honestly have no idea where to stand. On the one hand, I find that what she did was courageous in the sense that she stood up for what she believes. Some people feel that this is imposing on their rights. No, it just means she won't go against her beliefs. That's something everyone should do. If a Muslim friend asks that I don't eat meat in front of him, I won't. He's not forcing me to follow him, he's just staying loyal to his chosen religion. On the other hand, from various sources, Kim has divorced several times and remarried. In God's eyes, that's not ok. So, because she stood up against giving out same-sex marriage licenses, her testimony is now a bit screwed. From an outsiders' perspective, it looks like she's picking and choosing which rules from God to follow. That's not what a real Christian does.

There's also the issue of whether or not she should've been put in jail. No one should be forced to do something against their beliefs. However, I don't understand Kentucky saying that they arrested her for being in contempt of court, meaning she disobeyed the law. Now, I'm not a lawyer but since when is it ok for a court to make a law in the first place? When I hear "contempt of court", that means the person didn't show up when they had a hearing. The link below explains it further.

At the end of the day, no one us outside of Davis herself really truly knows the truth. From my perspective, she stood up for what she believed in, even though she has a checkered past. That is something we should focus on.
