Different Shouldn't Be Synonymous with Scary

Writer: Ruth JacksonRuth Jackson

Watching this commercial at first frightened me (I wanted to hide), but I'm glad I didn't press mute and instead listened because this short film made my mind explode.

I will be honest with you, I cried. This touched me in so many ways. In a sense, I was just like that creature. Sad. Lonely. Not sure where to go or who to trust. In this ad, many people mocked the creature and made fun of him, like some people have done to me. It wasn't until someone saw his potential and brightened the creature's personality that he shined. I'm not a typical African American female. In fact, I'm not a typical anything. I'm Ruth E. Jackson, unique and special. It wasn't until someone, a true friend, made me realize that I had a talent that should be shared and explored, instead of hidden, that I blossomed. My two loves, writing and Deaf Culture, have blown far beyond my imagination because people took the time to coach and encourage me. They could have destroyed my dream or mocked it like many others have. I love writing and I love the Deaf World and that's ok. I'm proud of that.

Whatever you love or whatever you want to do, don't let others make you feel worthless. It's true that people fear what's different, but that's no reason to quit doing what you love.

General Electric did a phenomenal job in getting the point across that ideas shouldn't be scary, but instead, embraced and cultivated so that they can shine and do good in this world. I'm still crying at the impact that this had on me. Seeing the value of that simple message fits in so many areas of life and is worth sharing.
